On 30th September 1922, 15 eager chaps from Guildford took on 15 more from Dorking at Stoke Hill Farm in the first Rugby Match to be played by Guildford RFC. We know little about the game or those who played (other than the score... Dorking won 11 – 9) but that ‘friendly’ encounter almost 100 years ago needs a rematch!
So exactly 100 years to the day...
At 19:45, on Friday 30th September under lights, Guildford Vets will be taking on Dorking Vets to commemorate this point in history and kick off the next 100 years of rugby at Guildford.
Preceded by our very own minis who will be playing from 5:30pm, this promises to be a great way to formally kick-off our Centenary Celebrations. The Clubhouse will be open for food and refreshment, come on down to support!
But That’s Not All!
On Saturday 1st October our Centenary Launch Lunch will be held in the Pavilion. With pre-drinks at 11:45 and a three-course meal from 12:30; we anticipate a fabulous celebration of this fantastic milestone. Our guest of honour will be the President of the RFU, (one Nigel Gillingham, who, being an old boy of The Royal Grammar School, played his formative rugby in Guildford). Other notable guests include the immediate past president of Surrey Rugby, Terry Long, the Mayors of Godalming, Waverley and Guildford and the Leader of Waverley Borough Council.
We will be using this event to raise funds and as a further opportunity to support our friends in the Wooden Spoon Society, and we are delighted to welcome David Thurtell from the Society to the lunch.
During the afternoon the 1st, 2nd and 3rd XVs will be taking to the field to continue their respective league matches and on Sunday we will see our Youth and Ladies sections in action as well.
Get the boots out and come down to celebrate all aspects of Guildford Rugby Club as it starts its next 100 years!
