Match Report – U14 Grizzlies (with Camberley) vs Horsham

Horsham made the long trek to Camberley, avoiding the M25 closures, for this Surrey Cup match against the combined might of Guildford & Camberley.  Our girls didn’t take long to make their intentions clear, with a well-worked team try in the 3rd minute being finished off by Lily F and getting the scoreboard in action at 5-0.  But Horsham struck back directly from the kick-off, with a breakaway try and conversion moving the score to 5-7.

A tense period followed, with action at both ends, but no scores until Millie ran the ball from close to our try line up to halfway, with Lola taking over and reaching close to the Horsham try line.  Darcey was on hand to finish things off, and with Lily F’s conversion, Guildford & Camberley pulled back into the lead at 12-7.

That lead was extended when, after a period of sustained pressure, Darcey again crossed the line.  Lily F slotted the extra points to take the score to 19-7.  But as the clock ticked towards half time, Horsham returned the favour with their own multi-phase attack.  Half-time score 19-12, with an intense second half clearly on the cards.

I’m not sure what was said in the half-time team-talk but it clearly had the desired effect, with the Guilberley girls immediately going back on the attack.  A storming run by Bella was picked up and finished off by Lola, with Lily F again taking the conversion for 26-12.    And only a couple of minutes later, another strong team try was completed by our captain Eira, taking us on to 31-12.

Horsham were not done yet, pushing forward and crossing our try line but somehow failing to score.  And then with 5 minutes to go, the visitors scored another breakaway try, narrowing the deficit to 31-19.   In a tense final few minutes there was no further score, and the match finished at 31-19.  It had been a high-quality game of rugby, with some great running, passing and kicking on both sides.  Players of the match (selected by the opposition) were Abi at 8, and Phoebe at 13.
