U13 Grizzles on a storming Surrey Cup run!
Fantastic results for the U13 Grizzlies (girls) team in the Surrey Cup so far, remaining undefeated with one pool match left to play.
Having kicked off the year with a 10 -0 victory in a cross-pool friendly match at Old Ruts, the real action started at Wimbledon on January 23rd. Our girls got off to a slow start, conceding two tries before fighting back to lead 3-2 at half time, and then running away 8-3 winners in the second half.
After a pause in February, the Cup action recommenced on 13th March as we hosted the combined forces of Sutton & Epsom, Camberley and Weybridge at Broadwater. You could tell after the first few minutes that this would be a hard-fought match with tough defence on both sides, and the score was only 1-1 at half time. The Grizzlies pushed ahead in the second half to lead 3-1, but the opposition fought back to 3-2 and kept attacking, so we were relieved to see the final whistle come without further score.
And so on 20th March we moved to Stoke Park to take on local rivals Guildfordians. With a dry pitch and sunny skies, the girls got a chance to show off their attacking moves, and stormed to a 6-0 lead at half time, despite playing uphill. Credit to Guildfordians who never gave up, and made the second half more competitive – but still the Grizzlies came away 10-1 winners at full time.
So, played 3 and won 3 in the Cup so far. Looking forward to next weekend when we are away to Chobham, who have also won all their games – so that will be an effective semi-final match to decide the winners of Pool B… who then go on to play the winners of Pool A in the Cup Final on 1st May. The girls have their first tour planned for the weekend before so hopefully they can pick up a thing or two in Leicestershire and bring it back to Surrey to finish their cup run with a flourish.
Regardless of how that goes, it’s been great to watch the girls developing as a team over the last few months, under the guidance of Ian, Rich, Rob and the rest of the coaching team. Pretty impressive results when you consider that half of the team hadn’t even played rugby before last September!
