U14s Grizzlies battle to a draw at Cobham

Sunday 3rd December, 2023

The weather forecast for the match had been 3 degrees and rainy, so when it actually turned out as 8 degrees and (mostly) dry, conditions felt positively balmy.  Still, the U14 girls from the combined clubs of Guildford and Camberley looked a bit chilly as they came out to warm up on the muddy pitches at Cobham.

Our team also looked a bit sluggish in the early encounters, with Cobham racing away to score two tries in the first quarter, which ended 10-0 to the home team.  But the momentum shifted in the second quarter, with our full back Lola unlucky not to score a try, and then some smart play from our hooker and captain Eira earned us an extra 10 metres on a penalty in the middle of the pitch.  Fly half Millie put in a long kick which was expertly chased down by Lily B, who sprinted over the try line to get the Grizzlies on the scoreboard.  10-5 to the hosts at half time.

In the third quarter the Grizzlies’ dominance continued with Lola scoring two brilliant tries – the first (which she also converted) from a clean breakaway, and the second a battling effort which saw her tackled, but then escape to score under the posts.  So, the third quarter ended with the Grizzlies in a 10-17 lead.

Big credit to Cobham who refused to concede defeat and mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter, with two further tries, the second of which was converted to take the home side back into a 22-17 lead.   It was then our girls’ turn to show their resilience:  the restart kick from Cobham’s last try was caught by Millie who broke through the opposition line, and after a couple of hand-offs was able to dive over the line to bring the score to an evenly-balanced 22-22.

Neither side was able to add to that in the tense final few minutes, and both looked relieved when the final whistle went.  So, a hard-fought draw between two evenly-matched sides, and a real nail-biter for the parents cheering on the sidelines as the momentum switched back and forth.  It was particularly good to see some of our younger players getting really stuck into the tackling, running and passing.
