Guildford Rugby Club’s recent ‘Greatest Ever’ City Lunch (No.10) has again been voted “The Best Yet” by our regular City Lunch ‘officianados’.
It was a marvellous afternoon where 120 like-minded individuals came together to celebrate all that is good about rugby in the company of Sir Gareth Edwards CBE – a true legend of the game best known for the part he played in ‘That Try’ and who is consistently voted the greatest player to have ever played the game.
We were also joined by the effervescent John Inverdale who was back for a record tenth time as MC auctioneer and raconteur.
After coming together an limbering up with an hour of ‘Cocktail Looseners’, guests enjoyed a sumptuous three course meal that was interspersed the Heads & Tails quiz and a truly insightful and entertaining Q&A with Sir Gareth and Invers which included Gareth’s account of how he came to receive the scoring pass for ‘That Try’. The lunch and Q&A was followed by a bit of fundraising that included the shortest ever auction for a luxury holiday in Mauritius kindly provided by Club Sponsor Mark Boullé of Beachcomber Tours!
City Lunch No.10 lived up to the high expectations set by previous lunches, delivering another first class event whilst raising a few quid in the process.
I’m delighted to report that the ten lunches held over the past five years have generated net proceeds in excess of £150,000 for the club which is an incredible achievement and stands testimony to the success of these lunches and the support we’ve received from our guests and fundraisers. Thank You!
These photos and short video may also be useful to those looking to fill in some of the gaps ‘lost’ during the afternoon or go some way to explaining why our Club Captain ended up at Gatwick Airport. Perhaps he thought he was Mauritius bound!
