The end of season Surrey U13 Girls 7s Festival hosted by Esher was a fitting finale for all the girls that participated. With 5 teams competing, Guildford came away winners of their match v Battersea Ironsides 8 – 0 and lost v London Irish 4 – 1, having included a few players from Old Reigatians. The third and last game saw players from all sides mixed together to compete in some very fast, high intensity matches.
With Year 1 in the Girls Division 3 Year Plan now completed, the U11 and U13 teams had some good wins, in particular in 7s, and saw some real progress over the season. The season is now over until Sept 8th, when we will have U15, U13 and U11 girls sections represented.
Meanwhile, there are plans afoot to have Touch Rugby sessions starting Wednesday June 5th for all U13 girls and boys to be held Wed nights, 7-8 PM at the club. All players welcome.
Thanks to the girls coaches over the last year, Chloe Butler, Ian Hopkins and Jonathan Bentley, as well as the referees Rob Newness Smith, Dave Bimpson and Bric, for their time in this development phase of the Guildford Grizzlies Girls Program. From one girl’s team in all of the Surrey clubs 4 years ago, there are now 25 competitive teams at 10 clubs. Some clubs are more advanced than others with 3 years of match play and a large pool of girls involved, and Guildford, in the same vein, intends to double its intake from September 2019 to over 40 girls across 3 age groups. Spread the word as we want to involve as many girls as possible from September: give rugby a try!
