Guildford 8 – 19 Dorking

Guildford closed out the year with an 8-19 loss against local rivals Dorking in atrocious conditions down at Broadwater on Saturday in the final game of 2018. The game opened in front of a large crowd despite the weather, bolstered by 150 attending the traditional Christmas Lunch beforehand. It was a scrappy affair from the off, with little to choose between the sides. Dorking were the first to score, the referee deeming Guildford to have collapsed a driving maul from a lineout and awarding a penalty try 0-7. The game continued with Guildford unable to turn periods of pressure into points. After 20 minutes, Dorking added to their lead, going over after a series of short drives on the Guildford line for an unconverted try to make is 0-12 which is how the teams closed out the half.

Guildford opened their account early in the second half after a penalty was awarded for a high tackle and Alex Jordan stepped up to make it 3-12. Guildford followed up with their first try when scrum half Kyle Brown cleverly chipped a flat defensive line from a ruck on the Dorking 22, the ball rolling over the line and Jordan winning the race to touch down to bring Guildford within a score 8-12. The home side were unable to maintain the momentum and it was Dorking, from another series of short drives that closed the game out with a converted try to finish 8-19.

Guildford finish the year 7th in a very tight table knowing the 4 league games in January will make or break the season. Dave Ward’s squad has been stretched by a number of short term injuries and they will benefit from those returning players in January but it’s clear there is going to be little time to enjoy their turkey before heading back out on to the training field.

There will be rugby at Broadwater on Saturday as Guildford take on Effingham and Leatherhead in an Under 21 fixture, kicking off at 2pm.
