Gazelles 15-19 Plymouth

Last Sunday the Guildford gazelles entertained recently relegated Plymouth at Broadwater in what turned out to be a highly entertaining and nail biting affair.
Early territorial advantage went to Guildford as with the wind at their backs kicked the ball repeatedly down field apply constant pressure at set piece and in the loose. With Plymouth able to escape their half Ruth Harper carried the ball through 2 would be tacklers and scampered over the line from 20m out. The conversion was missed.
Guildford sticking to this structured kick and chase game forced the error count thwarted multiple times by Plymouth in the final third. Finally a kick to the corner allowed the gazelles to set up a driving maul guided straight to the try line by stand in skipper Sarah Sanderson.
The half time whistle quickly followed with the score 10-0 to Guildford.
The second half saw a change in fortunes for both sides, string carrier by Plymouth and lapses in concentration from the gazelles allowed 2 converted tries to be scored for Plymouth, taking the score to 10-14.
As in the previous week Guildford looked to the bench to add more bite and impetus to their side strong carries from newbie Freya Eden and Anna Clarke swung momentum back in Guildford’s favour.
2 lineouts were held up short of the line before finally Victoria Boothman followed Sanderson’s lead from the first half and steered the third one home. 15-14.
With only a few minutes left in the game everything was up for grabs with both sides having opportunities, it was Plymouth however who capitalised as a flowing backs move created space for the Plymouth 6 to burst through a gap and beat the cover defence to the corner.
The final score 15-19 to Plymouth.
