Chairman’s Letter no. 17

Dear Fellow Members,

I hope all are doing well, enjoyed a great summer with your families, and are enjoying the young Rugby Season.

It’s been a while since I sent a Letter and I just wanted to give an update to all.

As for Rugby, the season seems like it has only just arrived.  But, as it is with the World Cup, we are well underway!!

For the senior men, the new coaching team of Tom Williams and Simon Coles, supported by James Chisholm, have created a positive atmosphere which we’re seeing on and off the pitch. It’s been a tough start for Tom’s squad, but with a young team learning a new structure under new captain Matt Poole we’ve had some good Matches and effort and expect the progress to continue. It has been  great to see the support from the Club on Match days as well!!

As for the Gazelles, who now training twice a week, they have had their usual strong start to the season and It’s great to see them continue their form from recent seasons into a big year for them. Our 2nd and 3rd teams have suffered from a number of cancellations, indicative of a wider issue throughout the country of player numbers dropping away. We’re pleased that we’ve been able to put teams out each week, but I know that the guys are frustrated by the lack of opposition.

Off the field, we’re pleased to be driving new conversations around player Wellbeing and hope to identify someone to take ownership of this important topic going forward. You will have seen the volunteer recruitment letter that went out earlier, which included this role amongst others. We have lots to do to support the Club which is as vibrant now as ever, with support needed from the senior men’s side on match day, through writing up the games for the Surrey Advertiser to driving our online presence. If you are willing and able to give some time, or think you have identified something that needs doing and can help, please do reach out !

Our next City Lunch is this Friday 18th October, only days away and promises to be another fantastic afternoon, this time in the company of Welsh great Jonathan Davies. There is still time to grab a ticket which can be bought over the bar or by e-mailing our Director of Rugby, Skippy on [email protected]. For those of you who can’t make it,  we’ll circulate the auction prizes for you to bid on, which include golf at Celtic Manor with Jonathan himself !

Anyone who has come to our Club on match days cannot fail to notice our sizeable Vets contingent, a section of the Club that has been going in various guises for over 35 years. In order to celebrate this, we’re going to have a VP Lunch dedicated to Veterans rugby at Broadwater, from the original Dobbins through to the Shires and the current Guildford Vets, on Saturday November 16th before the men’s home league game against Dorking. This will be three courses at £15 a head and promises to be a great day with some old pictures, a special programme dedicated to the history of the Vets and no doubt a few words from some of the Ghosts of Rugby Past! All former players of both Guildford and Godalming and Old Guildfordians are most welcome. Please do pick the phone up and talk to your old team mates and encourage them to come down to ensure we have a day to remember.

Lastly, hopefully you all read Nick Taft’s Treasurer Letter and Finance Report he provided.  It was positive to see that initiatives taken have had some success, with some areas seeing a dramatic improvement, such as Banquets and Catering.

This is great progress and something we can continue to build on.

But, as I have always said, the Club needs your support in any way you can give.  Please come down and get involved.

Feel free to reach out to me with any questions.

See you at the Club

All the best
