Chairman’s Letter No. 10

Dear Fellow Members,

The start of the new Rugby season is exciting and vibrant down at the Club and I hope all are enjoying it.

As for Rugby, it quickly arrived for the 1st XV in September with five consecutive league games in the month. As the calendar flips, our record show three wins, and two losses by a single score. It’s indicative of how tough this league is that you could make a good argument for us winning or losing all five games. We’ve finished strongly, however, with consecutive wins home and away against Hertford and Tunbridge Wells and it seems that the squad and all the new faces are beginning to gel. It’s worth noting that those two clubs were our last two games of last season, where we desperately scrapped to stay in the league. Last season, we took a single point from both games, this season, 9 out of a possible 10. This leaves us fifth in the league, our highest position in this league since 1996/7 season. There will be tough times ahead and conspicuously some of the league leaders await, but it’s a good start and we should be pleased.

The second and third teams have both had solid starts as well and we’ve had a couple of clean sweeps of victories on Saturdays with wins across the board this month. The Gazelles have also started well and we expect big things from them this season. Our U21s side played once earlier this month, beating Old Ruts at home.

This all represents a massive amount of hard work by Dave Ward and his squad as well as a large support cast off the field. We have some great volunteers but we always need more and in addition, we’re looking for sponsors for our first team players. Please do reach out to Chris Alder or grab him in the bar to get details.

It was very heartening to see the fantastic turn out for the junior section coaches/admin day at the start of the season and the role out of the Junior Development Pathway by Ali Kendall and Matt Trott bodes well for the future development of our younger players. Ali has also been busy bedding into his Safeguarding role and I urge all coaches, admins, and indeed players and parents to be mindful of our obligations surrounding player welfare and to support Ali in this role and to escalate any concerns to him at the earliest opportunity.

As you are aware, and Thanks to Roy O’Brien’s hard work, the Player’s Kit is in and is in the process of being distributed to all.  Additionally, the Guildford Store is fully stocked with Player’s Kit, Post Match Kit, new Boots, socks, Leisure Wear and many other supplies.   Please stop in to check it all out.

The Guildford Rugby Club Website is now up and running and fully functional.  I would like to Thank Jason McEachran (room 11 design Ltd) for his efforts and great work in producing our new GRFC website.  Thanks also goes to Ollie Bancroft and the Comms committee for a great job in getting us off of Pitchero and onto the new GRFC website. The GRFC website will serve as a source for everything involved with The Club and Rugby, from Functions and Events, Rugby Match Schedules and updates, to all News associated.  Additionally, Membership dues can be paid directly through the website.  I would also like to thank Mark Read for all his efforts in navigating us through GDPR and also how the site needed to interact with the RFU core system GMS.

In regards to Functions and Events at the Club,  I am pleased to announce Sally Iddles, a local established caterer and food consultant has joined our Team.  Sally has commenced a review of our Event offering, operations, and commercial approach.  Sally will make initial recommendations and then move to a delivery phase designed to enhance what should be a very strong revenue earner for the club.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sue Gardner for all of her work in getting the events space up and running since Broadwater Pavilion’s inception and everything she has done for the Club over many years.  I also would like to wish her well in her new role on the Board of Surrey RFU to lead their marketing and communications strategy.

As the 3rd Quarter has just ended,  Nick Taft, our Treasurer, will be putting the Financials together.  The Board will review them once finalized and then Nick will send a Treasurer’s Letter to all Members updating the Club’s financial strength.

Although seems strange just coming out of Summer, Holiday events and parties are around the corner.  Please reach out to our team with any inquiries for your Parties!!

Lastly, as we all know, Rugby Internationals start next month and there is no better place to watch them then at your Club!!   The Club will be providing food and drink for all England Matches so please do come down to enjoy!!

Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions

I look forward to seeing you all at the Club.

All the best
