It is with great sadness we announce the recent passing of Alan Bird, a stalwart of Guildford Rugby Club who will be sadly missed.
Alan was, along with Des Carroll & John Jones, a driver towards modernization and openness of G&G RFC in the late 70’s & 80’s. He wanted Rugby & the culture it represented to be open to all.
His drive and ambition created the junior Rugby sections within the club.
A proud Welshman, who lived most of his life ‘with the English’, he rose to the very top in The Civil Service.
In retirement Alan moved to the borders to be near his daughter’s family, but his regular visits to GRFC were made to coincide with VP lunches and visits to his son in Haslemere.
Thanks to Peter Thornhill for some memories and this one sums Alan up ….. My last conversation with Alan was shortly after he returned home following surgery, it happened that Wales had beaten England the previous Saturday ,… the conversation was two minutes about his health & twenty about the glorious Welsh victory. Alan was a rugby man to the core, a proud family man that was a pleasure to share an hour or three with.
Alan was made a life member of the club in 1995 and was Hon Secretary from 1987-95.
We send our condolences to his wife Peggy and his children David and Helen.
