After Guildford RFC hosted the inaugural Surrey Core Values Festival on December 2nd, 2018, where the Guildford Grizzlies acquitted themselves well early in the season playing multiple sides for 10 minute halves, Dorking RFC then hosted the second Surrey Core Values Festival on Sunday 17th March. Guildford took their U13 and U11 girls 7’s teams to gain much needed game time ahead of our end of season competitions.
Our U13 girls kicked off against local rivals Guildfordians, some tight defence against their strong ball carriers saw our girls soon winning rucks & feeding our backs with quick ball for some great breakaway tries. Matches against Dorking & Horsham girls followed. Confidence at a high, we saw our newcomers really having a go at their defences and soon gaps opened up. An exceptional day for the Grizzlies, with 3 wins, including a hat trick for Grizzly Molly Crowhurst.
Our U11 girls played some excellent running rugby against tough opposition, who liked to impose their superior physicality. Our young squad might have been outmuscled but they are showing good maturity and understanding in a lot of technical areas of the game. Most importantly, their team spirit was unbreakable and, even though the games were tough, they hung on for a spectacular win against Old Ruts and even managed to come up with their own Grizzlies haka over the course of the day!
Best wishes to a number of our players still recovering from injuries. The coaches are looking forward to seeing you back training very soon, with the Waterfall Tankard lined up against Dorking on April 7th to finish off the games for the season with a solid foundation in place for next years’ U11, U13 and U15 Girls Rugby teams.
The Grizzlies are recruiting now any girls interested in trialling, and aim to double the size of the girls division in the 2019-2020 season.
