Guildford 46 – 0 Teddington

As storm Freya broke the Surrey borders the Gazelles awoke to the prospect of a home fixture against Teddington in conditions more fitting for Atlantic sailing than glorious running rugby.

With their closest rivals winning the day before, the Gazelles knew that if they wanted the league title to remain in their control only a win would do.  Teddington however would not be an easy task and were coming into the game buoyed by knocking Newbury out of the title race last week.

As the game kicked off the Gazelles set their stall out early with a strong set piece and decisive direct running from the whole team.  Getting within a few metres of the try line the Gazelles picked and went finally allowing Zoe Young to score her first try for club.  This led quickly to a second try for Freya Eden, again scoring her first try for the club, in near exact circumstances with Guildford’s pick and go game close to the line not being able to be repelled by Teddington.  Teddington managed to get a foothold in the game, dominating territory for the next 10 minutes or so but Guildford’s line held strong and managed to exit their half.  After applying enough pressure to Teddington, Scarlet English broke down the right wing to score in the corner giving the Gazelles a 15-0 lead at half time.

With a bonus point close to being achieved, the Gazelles’ relentless streak continued with Lottie Brown going over 30 seconds after kick off.  The bonus point was secured by Becki Simmons, crashing over for her first try of the season after good work from the forwards at the lineout.  Lottie Brown then snuck over for her second before Spencer Hastings crashed over under the posts for Guildford’s 7th.  Guildford’s final try was a great try considering the conditions, as Guildford turned the ball over 20m out before some slick handling from the backline sent Brown over for her hat-trick to put the final score 46-0.

The Gazelles now face Ellingham and Ringwood on 17th March at home with a Sunday lunch beforehand (where all support would be greatly appreciated) where a win will guarantee the league title and make history as the Gazelles will achieve their highest league position of all time.
