Updates – Guildford Grizzlies and Quins Ladies

GUILDFORD  GRIZZLIES GIRLS RUGBY

There has been progress on the Girls Rugby Development side at Guildford since we kicked this effort off in January 2018.

With 20 girls on the U11 and the U13 sides now (10 each), and growing slowly each month, Guildford is now fielding teams regularly for matches and has had some good results. We are successful against other similarly sized girls club teams, but will need more time and depth to take on the 3 clubs that have been in play for about 3 years and have over 25 girls in each age group.  Guildford’s 3 person coaching team of Chloe Butler, Ian Hopkins and Jonathan Bentley is exceptional and we now, in a short period, have 8 x U13 girls going to the Surrey County Trials in 2 weeks.

Triangular Matches: Guildford v Chobham v Old Reigatians, January 20th 2019

On the back of Guildford’s Girls Core Values Festival on December 2nd, closing out 2018 with over 10 girls teams in the region spending a successful afternoon in matches at our Club, the friendlies played on January 20th at Chobham were a good 2019 opener.

The U13s played 2 good games, tying one and losing the other. Positioning on the field was good, communication from the wings improved through the game. We ran when we had numbers out wide, but, as no pick and go is permitted, it took the players thinking to pass out wide. 3 areas of focus going forward: 1. Tackling – too many players decelerating into contact. 2. Ball handling – accuracy of pass. 3. When tackled, we often went to ground and set up the long present when a simple pop would have put a runner into space. Positively, the rucking was good, with only a few turnovers, and the teamwork and spirit were brilliant.  At half time, each player identified where they could improve, which they all did over the games played.

U11s had a good outing at Chobham, although we had to condition both games against Reigate as they are so much bigger than our girls. Their club has offered girls rugby for some years now against Guildford’s new start and have some good depth. We asked the girls to pass 4 times before scoring and it allowed them time to regroup, but in the end Old Reigatians was too strong for us. Tackling improved over the game, but we need to work on getting more confident going into contact, line speed and offloading. As a team, the girls played well, as they have in all of the matches they have played so far this season, and certainly are showing good progress before the festivals and matches coming up in February and March.

Well hosted by Chobham and a very good outing for the girls.

QUINS LADIES

The Grizzlies are lucky to have both the exceptional Gazelles Ladies Team at Guildford to watch (especially if their KO were closer to 1:00 pm for home games!), but also to have a Quins Ladies player, Chloe Butler, (also World Cup and Australian National Team) coaching the girls at the club. Chloe plays matches every Saturday and then appears Sunday morning to coach at Guildford. Many girls have gone to watch Chloe play at The Stoop, making the sport really come alive for them.

Harlequin Ladies beat historic rivals Richmond FC by 59 – 7 at The Stoop in their regular derby match in the Tyrell Premier 15’s . Chloe has been starting at no.7 and put in an 80 minute performance last weekend. She has been an integral part of the team’s last 11 wins with just three regular season rounds remaining in the competition. A rematch against Saracens (having both won 1 this season) is the game everyone is waiting to see.

Chloe is also coaching for Lions Sports Academy. Lions have a 3 day February Half Term Camp at Guildford from Monday 18th – Wednesday 20th of February. Chloe will be a part of the Lions Girls Only camps that will be held in the area, that will include other Tyrrell’s Premier girls 15’s players.
