Guildford Grizzlies U13s Waterfall Cup Update

Remembrance Day Sunday commitments meant kick off for the GRFC U13 girls first round Waterfall Cup game against Old Reigatians was pushed back to 2pm.

The newly formed GRFC Grizzlies (with some new friends from Warlingham RFC bolstering the starting lineup) took to the field against a strong & well established U13 team from ORRFC.

Our girls great spirit made up for their lack of match experience, and they learned quickly under pressure over the course of the game. Almost all our squad were playing their first, or near first, competitive game.  The first half saw ORRFC take a commanding lead but the Grizzlies stuck to their game plan, with improvement noticeable over the first half.

A water break and a good team talk at half time fired the girls up and we saw more defensive line speed, better tackling and ball ripping aggression in the 2nd half, leading to 3 great steals and a number of line breaks.   ORRFC tackling technique and some good running off the mark kept GRFC from scoring on a number of occasions.  Despite the scoreline GRFC Grizzlies 0 – 12 ORRFC, the girls second half was very close and competitive, and their attitude was first rate. They all thoroughly enjoyed the run out and are looking forward to more training to work harder on their defence and ball retention.

Smiles all round and they want to go again!

A Word from the Grizzlies Chair Susan Payne
“It was very good and positive experience for the girls, whose play improved dramatically over the 2 halves against a well-drilled and experienced team.  We invited 3 Warlingham RFC girls to join us and their coach wrote me Sunday night to say something the girls should be proud of.”

Thank you so much for inviting our girls down to play with you. Clearly the result was difficult against a strong club but I thought the way your players, coaches and parents approached the game was absolutely first class and demonstrated everything that is good about rugby. We would happily carry on twinning with you in future rounds of the Waterfall Cup if you would like to.”

Next week we are away training with our new friends @MightWarl RFC.

We urgently need more young female players (U11 – U13) to train & play with us.  If you would like to bring your daughter or sibling along, we train Sunday mornings 10am-12pm at the club, Pitch 8, just over the bridge on the left hand side.
