‘Greatest Ever’ City Lunch No.10

We are delighted that the ‘greatest player of all time’ and the scorer of ‘That Try’, Sir Gareth Edwards CBE will be our very special guest speaker at the forthcoming City Lunch on Friday, 26th October 2018 from 12:15pm onwards at Brasserie Blanc (Southbank), 9 Belvedere Road, London SE1 8YP.
We could think of no better ambassador of the game or special guest to help us celebrate our tenth City Lunch. It will be a privilege and a pleasure to ‘break bread’ in the company of such a sporting legend. We urge you to juggle your diaries, move Half Term and do what you can to be at this very special ‘Once in a Lifetime’ Lunch.
Many of you will know the drill by now but in case you’ve forgotten or are interested in coming to your first City Lunch, I’ve set out a few details below including a note about Gareth, a link to ‘That Try’, a Newcomers Guide and an appeal to anyone who can help with the Fundraising aspect of these lunches. We are always on the hunt for items that we can include in the Main and Silent Auctions; holidays, villas, ‘money can’t buy’ experiences, spa days, weekend getaways etc. If you can help us in anyway – no matter how small – it would be greatly appreciated.
We very much hope you will be able to get along for what will be the ‘Greatest Ever’ City Lunch with the ‘Greatest Ever’.
Sir Gareth Edwards CBE is constantly voted the world’s greatest rugby player of all time and is remembered for his part in ‘That Try’ for the Barbarians against New Zealand on 27th January 1973. Gareth still holds the record as the most popular Grogg of all time!
Gareth Edwards won his first international cap for Wales on 1 April 1967 at the age of 19 against France in Paris and went on to win 53 caps for Wales and score 20 international tries between 1967 and 1978 when he retired. All his caps were won in succession; he never had a dip in form or an injury. Edwards is Wales’ youngest ever captain at the age of 20 in an era when the Welsh side dominated the Five Nations Championship, winning the title seven times, including three grand slams. Edwards also played ten times for the British and Irish Lions, playing for the 1971 Lions team that was the team to win a series in New Zealand and for the unbeaten 1974 side in South Africa.
Click HERE to relive that day in 1973 when Legends were created. Edwards, Duckham, Gibson, Williams, Bevan and Bennett to name but a few; Duckham even had his name changed from David to Dai! You can watch ‘the try’ 10,000 times and never get bored of seeing it – It’s Magic!
We will also be joined by the ever-popular John Inverdale who returns for his tenth consecutive lunch as MC, compère, quizmaster and raconteur extraordinaire.
This is another amazing opportunity to enjoy a GRFC City Lunch in the company of Sir Gareth and ‘Invers’ a week before the Quilter Autumn Internationals kick off. The lunch may be your opportunity to bag a pair of tickets to one of the games that’s sold out!
More generally for the uninitiated, these lunches offer a wonderful excuse for likeminded people to come together for a fabulous afternoon under the strap line ‘Fun, Friendship and Fraternity’ and at just £90 per ticket the lunch represents incredible value for money; offering table sizes to suit, an unlimited cocktail hour, three course meal followed by what is sure to be a memorable Q&A with Gareth and John.
These lunches are also a vital source of fundraising for Guildford RFC.
As a non-profit making organisation and CASC registered we are reliant on your generosity. With the low £90 ticket price only just covering the cost of the event, all revenue received on the day from the Heads & Tails, the Raffle, Main Auction & Silent Auctions will ultimately determine the success of the event as a fundraiser.
We are always on the hunt for items that we can include in the Main and Silent Auctions; holidays, villas, ‘money can’t buy’ experiences, spa days, weekend getaways etc. If you can help us in anyway – no matter how small – it would be very much appreciated.
Mindful that Sir Gareth Edwards is one of the greatest rugby players of all time and that these lunches are incredibly popular and sell-out well in advance, we would urge you to reserve your tables/places directly via email at Tim Williams at your earliest opportunity.
Please free to pass on this invitation to anyone you think might be interested and if you are a regular perhaps you could consider heading up your own table?
We very much hope you will be able to join us on Friday 26th October from 12:15pm at Brasserie Blanc Southwark for lunch with ’Gareth and Invers’
You won’t be disappointed!
Thank you for your support of these City Lunches and Guildford Rugby Club.
