Guildford 1st XV 5, Tring RFC 73 – Saturday 17th March 2018
Guildford suffered a dispiriting defeat at home to Tring on the weekend, eventually going down 11 tries to 1, half of these scored in the last quarter of the game when an obviously tiring side were put to the sword. Dave Ward’s squad has seen several players struck with season ending injuries in the past month and others injured away at Guernsey, his hand was reduced still further with two players hurt in training on Thursday and two more hurt during the warm up for the game. In a league this tough, its difficult to be consistently competitive when the side is changing so much each week and all this during a stretch where we’ve played the top three sides in the league.
Despite the result it’s worth noting how hard those on and off the field are working, from the coaching and touch line team through the entire squad, there is no lack of effort and the spirit is still very good. Congratulations to Charlie Cutting making his debut and recently signed Ali Chisholm who scored our only try with what I think was his first touch on home soil, it was also nice to see Sam Kettle back in the fold.
At half time, we got to watch the Under 9s play a game on the main pitch, which was a lot of fun, well done to them.
In two weeks time we play Towcestrians at their place, the bottom side in the league, so we have time to regroup and focus on a much needed win. With some of the Guernsey niggles out of the way, we should be able to field a stronger side and get some momentum heading in to the final three games of the season after this.
