Shelford 1st XV 64, Guildford 1st XV 0 – Saturday 3rd February 2018
Guildford went to Shelford on Saturday with a side that showed 8 changes from the previous week enforced by unavailability and injuries including skipper and number 8 Joe Garner who suffered a knee injury in the previous weekís loss to Westcombe Park. James Phillips and Rob Mitchell partnered in the second row shifting Alex Burrill to 8, Gareth Davies started at 10 and Pierre Goodwin and Jordan Gomez were brought up to start at centre and right wing, with Christian King starting on the left wing and Freddy Hooper returning at full back to accommodate and being named as vice-captain, with club stalwart Bill Mairs leading the side. Guildford paid the price for the disruption however, enduring a tough day at the office against a fired up home side who had conceded over 30 points at Broadwater earlier in the season.
Shelford were on the board after only 5 minutes and blew Guildford away in the first half, with prolific winger Charlie Parkhouse scoring 4 of the home sides 7 tries to leave Guildford reeling and 45-0 down at the break. Guildford also suffered a number of injuries, losing Rory Andrews and hooker Tom Hickey.
Guilford reorganised at the break and the score remained the same for 35 minutes of the second half before Shelford added 3 more in the dying minutes to leave the scoreboard showing 64-0 when the referee bought an end to the proceedings.
Guildford place 8th in the league, but there are only ten points separating 7th and 12th and itís clear that a number of sides are showing considerable strength that wasnít present before Christmas. This Saturday provides a welcome break from league rugby to allow Dave Wardís side to draw breath, but the final weeks of the season will be a tough ride as Guildford play the top three in the league in succession starting with Barnes at home on 17th.
