Guildford Gazelles Youth started in 2004 and we now have a team for U15 (ages 12-14) and U18 (ages 15 -17).
We welcome everyone regardless of your playing experience or fitness level- rugby really is a sport that has a place for everyone… anyone can learn to play! Some of our players at Guildford have now been playing for a few years but lots are new to the game. We have a team of 4 coaches who are able to make sure that any new players are given all the support they need to learn about rugby and, most importantly, to help them to enjoy it.
Training takes place on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 7.30pm (before Gazelles Senior training) and all training sessions are run by Rugby Football Union qualified coaching staff that have experience in coaching girls’ rugby. This year we will be running some training sessions just as a Club and some as part of the West Surrey District Girls’ Rugby Scheme (see below).
For training you will need to wear shorts or tracksuit bottoms (or both if cold!), t-shirt and sweat shirt or rugby shirt, rugby boots (although football/ hockey boots or trainers are fine until you decide if you like rugby) and a gum shield (again, don’t worry about this if you are new to rugby, we can talk to you about this at your first training session).
Membership to Guildford RFC is £55 per year although your first 4 weeks are free whilst you decide if rugby is the sport for you.
Matches take place on Sundays and, as for training, will be played either as a Club game or as part of the West Surrey Girls’ Rugby District Scheme and everyone will have an opportunity to play matches regardless of their experience. We strongly encourage parents, guardians, grandparents and friends to come along and support the matches, especially when we play at home. The Clubhouse is always open for a hot drink and bacon sandwich to help keep you warm and your support is an invaluable source of encouragement to the girls.
Being part of the Guildford Gazelles Youth is not only about playing rugby, there are plenty of team socials events organized throughout the season too.
West Surrey District Girls’ Rugby
Because player numbers very often change through the season, this year we have decided to join with Camberley, Chobham and Cranleigh RFC to form a new rugby force within our area. This will enable us to create 2 teams for U18’s (one of which will be a ‘development’ side for newer players) and 1 team for U15’s. In doing so we hope to achieve the following:
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact either Anna Brown (Gazelles Youth Manager) or Kaz Hatcher (Gazelles Youth Head Coach).
