Guildford RFC Minis welcomes players from age 2+ years to 12 years. The practical lower age limit is 6 although well co-ordinated rising 5s would not be turned away. Under 6's are unable to play in competitive games for insurance reasons. Under 6's will be gauged on their ability and streamed accordingly, however all have a great time and enjoy a fun packed morning.
Guildford RFC Micros run an under 5's non competitive group from the age of 2 upwards.
What is Mini Rugby? - A game format introduced at each age group in order that players can progress towards the 15 a-side game. The Rugby Continuum introduces those skills gradually to players through the age groups.
What is Micro Rugby? – An introduction into rugby with emphasis on fun and team work. Excellent for improving hand/eye coordination and other awareness skills – rugby balls never go where you want them to.
All Mini's Training times: 10am – 12noon.
Some younger age groups ( U7s, U8s ) may start at 10:30am. Please check with specific age group head coach.
Any boy or girl under 12 years of age. Children must play in their relevant age group. The determining age is midnight on 31st August 2011.
Every Sunday from 10:30am to 12noon every Sunday from first week in September through to last weekend in April. We have a competitive range of fixtures and festivals as well as Triangular games. We play away at clubs and enjoy joint coaching sessions with a wide variety of local clubs. Your respective Age Group Coach will have the exact details.
Please note: U11s training starts at 10:00am
Generally, depending on respective age group the session is broken down into the following.
In the younger age groups this will vary.
It is expected that all coaches have relevant RFU coaching qualifications and have been CRB checked. The club is a volunteer club. All the officers, coaches, administrators and parents who help out every Sunday do so on a completely voluntarily basis - without them there would be no club. We are NOT a creche. We like parents/guardians/accompanying adult to stay, watch and encourage the children during the sessions. If unable you must leave a contact number. It is absolutely essential that at the end of the session someone is there to collect the children on time Fixtures/Festivals/Triangulars There are 32 Sundays when mini rugby is played at Guildford RFC. Fixtures are played throughout the season against other clubs on a home and away basis. Festivals are where 4 or more clubs play on league basis normally to establish a winner. There are normally trophies, medals, or certificates for competitors.
There are no coaching sessions on Easter Sunday or on Sundays around Christmas/New Year depending on age-group preference.
Coaching may also be cancelled if pitches are frozen solid/waterlogged or in other extreme weather conditions. To save a wasted trip please call your coach.
Coaching will not be cancelled if it is merely cold, wet and miserable, but if it is truly horrible we will limit the session length accordingly. However, truly horrible days are surprisingly rare.
Insurance for players is provided by the club through RFU. It is advisable to check your own insurance for additional cover.
Give your child time to decide whether he/she likes mini-rugby and wants to continue before paying the subs or buying any kit. A FULLwater bottle is essential in all weather to prevent de-hydration. Please make sure your child is adequately protected from the cold.
It is possible for younger age groups to play mini rugby in trainers at the start of the season. Boots will be needed for muddy ground.
Tetanus - All players and coaches should have current tetanus cover – this is not usually a problem with school age children but if you are in any doubt please check with your GP.
Mouthguards/Gumshields - protect teeth, jaw and lips and also reduce the risk of concussion. It is advisable that all players have mouth guards that fit well. We insist on it for under-9s + above. The best are custom made by a dentist to ensure a good, comfortable fit.
Boots - Boots should fit well and be in reasonable condition. Studs must be safe. The modern 'blade' type football boots are not illegal as long as they are rubber-moulded and not sharp.
Shin-guards - Shin-guards can be worn, and are especially advisable for the front rows of the contested scrums (under-10 and above).
